Enrichment Information – Spring 2012

 

What:              On-site classes for early and late birds in 1st, 2nd or 3rd grade
When:                     8:30-9:30am for late birds (M, T, Th, F)

                                2:05-3:05pm for early birds (M, T, Th, F)

                                1:45-3:00pm for all 1st-3rd graders (Wed only)
3:05 - 4:15pm  After school classes for all grade levels

                                Spring session = Feb 27 - June 7

(No class   during conferences or on early release days)

 Cost For Early Bird/Late Bird:  Classes are $7.50 per hour, except Spanish/(not offered at all schools – see schedule below) classes which are $11 and Wednesday afternoon classes which are $10.

AFTER SCHOOL CLASSES AND FEES - SPRING 2012

CORNELL

Engineering –Students use a wide range of interesting materials gathered from The Home Depot and The East Bay Depot for Creative Reuse to build things like rockets, bridges, and roller coasters. They are given free range of resources to accomplish their most ambitious designs. To top it off, you get to take home your creations!

·       Offered Tuesdays 3:15-4:15 for returning students. ($110 + $25 materials fee)

·       Offered Fridays 3:15-4:15 for new and returning students. ($120 + $25 materials fee)

Tennis–Mondays ($120) and Thursdays ($140) 3:15-4:15 at Ocean View Park (or at OV School on rainy days)

Italian – Mondays ($121) (1-5th grades)                                               A fun introduction to the Italian language, focusing on vocabulary and speaking skills. Returning students from last year are welcome and will continue to be challenged in new ways.

Class descriptions 
Engineering:

World Percussion:

In this class students will learn both basic concepts of rhythm from a variety of cultural sources. The students will learn about the cultural significance that music and particular instruments have within certain cultures.  Instruments provided.

Vocal Music:

In this class students will learn songs from many genres, from jazz to folk to hip hop. They will also be covering the very basics of music theory and harmony and learn how to sing together and perform in a group.

Guitar:

Young musicians explore the world of guitar in a fun, nurturing group environment. Students will learn songs and guitar basics through puzzles and games as well as more traditional technique studies. Ideal for beginners.   Guitars NOT provided.

Hip Hop:

Students are introduced to different styles of Hip Hop.  Students refine their sense of rhythm, expand their knowledge of repertoire and gain enhanced control of their movements.

Poekoelan:

Poekoelan is a martial art that promotes confidence, coordination and discipline in a safe - FUN!  -  and caring environment.   This class focuses on Poekoelan basics, including animal style movements, physical and verbal self-defense, and conditioning. Each child is encouraged to reach his or her limitless potential.

Environmental Education:

Do you love to explore nature? Do you love doing science experiments and projects? Students will be learning all about the environment and ways to protect it in this hands-on class.

Capoeira:

A vigorous art form that originated in Brazil, Capoeira has elements of ritualized combat, dance, music and song. It is practiced as a means of self‐defense, personal development, social integration, and cultural awareness.

 Visual Arts:

Students in the morning class will explore mixed media art making using different creative reuse materials.   Students in the afternoon class will be working on designing  and  painting  colorful wooden  panels  that will be  used  to  beautify  the  school.

Music and Sound for Children:

This unique class is for children with or without a musical background and offer a non-traditional approach to making music. We will create music and sound with everyday objects, and simple objects (e.g.  toys, whistles, pots, pans, and chalkboards) We will create musical games and stories based on ideas from students.  Students collaborate creatively in a fun-filled environment.  Students will create a piece for performance that may include objects, a poem, or story.

Spanish:

Lango instructors utilize a highly effective immersion program.  Classes are fun and interactive. For more information see www.lango.com.  Returning students are welcome to register.   Lango has assured us that students will be challenged at the appropriate level.

Italian:

Engaging, fun instruction in the Italian language.      

Yoga:

A fun and creative class for kids to enjoy, explore and learn yoga while developing flexibility, strength, breathing, and body awareness.   As students stretch their bodies, they will also stretch their imaginations, cooperation and focus skills in a playful, safe environment.  The class includes asana and creative movement, interactive games, stories, and peaceful moments.   

Recorder:

Learn about notes and music by playing the recorder in this fun class.

Nature Writing

In  this Nature  Writing Workshop  we’ll  use our artist’s eye to observe the  natural  world  around us and record what we’ve discovered in the form of poetry, fiction and non-fiction.  We use the arts (including theater and visual art) as a way to spark our imaginations and fuel our ideas. In the last class, we’ll share our work at an informal reading with family and friends and each student will go home with a journal.

Clay/Sculpture:

Students  will  have  the  opportunity  to  explore  and  create  with  various  types  of clay materials.

Music Appreciation:

In music exploration class, kids hear stories and learn how to sing songs from all over the world, including chants from Africa, Tibet, Israel, India and America. They learn about ‘Deep Listening’ – how to listen to sounds, music, and rhythm with a “beginner’s ear,” without judgment or expectation. Through this process they learn how to listen to each other and to themselves.

Tennis:

Engage in fun exercises and activities to learn the basic skills of the game of tennis.   

Folklorico Fun

Students discover the rich traditions of México through music, dance and hands-on art projects. Cultures from  all over the world (Spanish, Arabic, African, Asian, German) blended  with Mexican indigenous cultures to create a colorful palette for students  to  use  to  explore  their  creative, expressive  self. Instruments and materials provided.
