CAPITAL CAMPAIGN
As part of the City of Richmond’s urban renewal and redevelopment plans, the East Bay Center for the Performing Arts has launched an ambitious multi million capital campaign to fund the renovation and restoration of the historically significant Winters Building in downtown Richmond.
Under the leadership of Artistic Director Jordan Simmons, the East Bay Center has established a public-private partnership whose founding institutional investors include the City of Richmond, the Richmond Community Redevelopment Agency, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, and the California Cultural and Historical Endowment (CCHE).
Although the area surrounding East Bay Center for the Performing Arts’ is widely acknowledged for its half-century of poverty and violence, Center students are neither marginalized in spirit nor violent of mind. At home in a place of artistic discovery, they thrive. Over the last forty years our program has reached more than fifty thousand youth and young adults.
The Winters Building Restoration Project will have a significant and measurable impact on our next 100,000 students, the residents of the Iron Triangle neighborhood of downtown Richmond, California, and the surrounding Bay Area region. The project will dramatically increase the building’s capacity as a community and Bay Area resource.
Highlights of the construction project include:
Complete reconstruction of the internal structure and restoration of the historic Winters Building in the Iron Triangle neighborhood of downtown Richmond.
Construction of a new 200 seat theater which, as a community performance and rehearsal venue, will restore much of the ground floor to its original volume.
Expansion of the Second floor - including the creation of a new 200 seat Proscenium Theater designed as a versatile multi-use, state-of-the-art performance and training venue.
Realization of a permanent home for the organization, with enhanced instructional and public performance spaces for students, neighborhood residents and the community.
Restoring the building's façade to evoke its original beauty during the World War II era of Richmond's history.
Providing for state-of-the-art seismic stabilization, significant upgrades in fire and safety functionality, major mechanical systems and roof replacement, and improvements to the lower level in the form of high quality practice and instructional program space, digital arts work stations, and student waiting areas, thereby increasing overall instructional spaces by 5,000 net square feet.
