Friday, November 9, 2018
Time: 6:30pm-9pm
Unitarian Universalist Church of Berkeley
1 Lawson Road, Kensington, CA

Come see our resident company Voices of Reason with Val Troutt, Jazz Collective accompaniment open for renowned Ysaye Barnwell at Unitarian Universalist Church of Berkeley's Community Sing on Friday, November 9th!

Voices of Reason:

Comprised of eight to sixteen young singers, Voices of Reason adds an urban mix of school-yard intensity and hip hop inflection to the deep roots of African American Song — spirituals, gospel, blues, jazz, R&B, and soul singing. Whether a capella or accompanied, Voices of Reason reminds us that before the first word was spoken, it was most likely sung.

Join us for a COMMUNITY SING, when world-renowned Dr. Ysaye Barnwell will show us how to rock the house! Formerly with the famed acapella ensemble Sweet Honey in The Rock, Dr. Barnwell is an accomplished composer, vocalist and instrumentalist who has spent the last 30 years working as a master teacher and choral clinician in African American cultural performance.

A proponent of cultural activism, she works to bring her audience back into the experience of music as message and unifier. We are in so many ways the same, that if we could just push the other stuff aside and let the essence come through, we would understand. We all have intention, feeling and purpose. Music heals, educates, agitates.

Dr. Barnwell has conducted her work on three continents, making it a source of inspiration for singers and non-singers, and a model of pedagogy for educators, cultural activists, historians and people who love to sing!

Tickets: $10-20

Tickets can be purchased at the door.
