East Bay Center is proud to present Kekeli, a new work-in-progress directed and choreographed by renowned master drummer/dancer, scholar and ensemble Founder/Artistic Director, CK Ladzekpo. In the Ewe language of West Africa's Anglo-Ewe, Kekeli means “sunshine" and is performed tonight by East Bay Center’s West African Music & Dance Ensemble with special guest dancers from 1 Up CrewKekeli also features Betty Ladzekpo, long-time principal dancer and beloved mentor/faculty member, as well as additional choreography by Kwaku Manu, Tarik Rollerson, and Philip Agyapong, in collaboration with master drummer Francis Akotuah. Last, but not least, we'd like to acknowledge the contributions of current Center Young Artist Diploma Program students who are in the cast, as well as young adult Center alumni dancer/choreographers – Kabreshiona Smith, Aziza Thompson and Deonate Watkins.

Primary funding for this commission and production was provided by Wallace Alexander Gerbode Foundation – Special Awards in the Arts. Additional funding was provided by the California Arts Council’s Artists in Communities Program, the Fleishhacker Foundation Special Arts Grants Program, and the UC Berkeley Richmond Partnership Fund of the Richmond Community Foundation.
