Poetry: Creation and Performance | Ages 12-18

We will see how poetry began as a mnemonic (memory) device and means of telling stories as well as how some of today’s poets talk about current struggles and concerns with new and vibrant language. We will read aloud and move with poets from Langston Hughes to Mary Oliver, William Shakespeare to Julia de Burgos, Homer to Maya Angelou, William Blake to June Jordan, Amiri Baraka to Theresa Hak Kyung Cha (Dictee) and other contemporary poets and lyricists of the students’ choosing, as well as poetry composed by the students.
